Just wanted to say that I have made this wonderful recipe twice now, and it is one of our family's favorite. My husband loves it! I like it, but you can't eat it all! :) Like others, I used a mix of can and dried black beans, but I also added frozen chopped tomatoes and found it to be even better than my first attempt. This is a great recipe, and I am sure that there is a lot of variation possible with it. Try it! It's wonderful!
After I made this, I tried adding more cooked lentils to the soup. It was a little bit too thick, but I think it would have been better with more lentils. I am thinking of adding more next time.
It's pretty tasty on its own! But I added 4 chopped zucchini and a chopped egg for crunch. I was very careful to cut them all into pieces that were just a little bit smaller than the lentils so they would cook evenly and not separate. The egg was the only thing that didn't cook well. And it cracked in the pot and leaked all over the bottom. By the time I realized it had happened, it was too late! The rest of the soup was fine though.
To reheat ham and bean soup in a microwave, place about 10 ounces of the soup in a microwave-safe bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and microwave on high for about 4 minutes. Be sure to stir the soup before serving.
It is possible to transfer the cooked ham and bean soup into a Dutch oven. Let the soup cool slightly, then heat it over medium-low heat. The soup should be piping hot, so you may need to remove the cover.
By placing a Dutch oven or skillet filled with ham and bean soup on the stove on low heat, it takes a bit longer to heat it up. Depending on the heat of the stove, about 15 minutes is usually sufficient to heat 10 ounces of ham and bean soup to 165 F. But, if you want to heat it even faster, use a stovetop grill or a broiler. I always turn on the broiler and heat the soup until it’s bubbly and hot.
I think this Instant Pot Black Bean Soup is the best soup I have ever made. It is easy, healthy and comforting. I wanted to make it for my 4 year old who loves black beans, but I wanted to make it kid friendly so I added chicken.
