Personality and traits

According to the New York Times, Nathaniel Ayers is a “laid-back, jazz-loving, free-spirited, black man who has a huge appetite for knowledge, an eclectic musical background and a sometimes goofy sense of humor.” His father, David Ayers, “has a more fastidious, humble quality.” He is not only the most physically gifted member of the Ayers family, but is also the most academically gifted. Although, before he was hospitalized, Nathaniel “had been taking classes in the Ivy League, the Juilliard School and the Berklee College of Music.”

At the age of seven, Nathaniel was inspired by his godfather, jazz guitarist Danny Moore, who played on the album Ah Um. He decided to devote his life to music. Nathaniel is "an endearing contradiction" who is simultaneously "sweet and sly, direct and mischievous, self-deprecating and irascible."

Music

When Nathaniel began playing jazz in a Chicago music school, he was a freshman. In high school, he was an "avid" volleyball player, but he switched to bass at the urging of his band director, Bill Bogan. It was while working as an assistant jazz trombonist at the Playboy Jazz Festival that he decided to study the instrument as a career.

He attended two New England Conservatory of Music schools: the Precollege Division and the Conservatory Division. He performed with the Boston Conservatory Jazz Ensemble, the Harvard Quartet, the Manhattan Music School Jazz Ensemble, and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
