The technology behind the Famicom was so advanced that Japanese developers could not simply port their game code from the old 16-bit system to the new, and had to entirely rewrite their code. This resulted in many games taking months to complete and generally being much more expensive to make than their 16-bit counterpart. Many of these titles were never even released outside of Japan. The most successful of these new games were titles such as Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2.
The NES remained Nintendo's only 16-bit console until the release of the Game Boy, which was a portable model of the Game Boy Color. The NES was not discontinued until the release of the Game Boy Color in 2001, and was replaced by the Game Boy Advance in 2003.
The Famicom wasn't completely discontinued, but it was offered by Nintendo as a second-hand system. However, most people who purchased the Famicom were not actually using it to play video games, but were buying it as a console to play their old Nintendo NES games.
As the NES grew in popularity, many games were licensed to Nintendo by third parties, and Nintendo's license agreements allowed Nintendo to continue to produce, and continue to sell, NES games. In fact, Nintendo stopped producing new NES hardware, and began developing only software for the NES. It was not until the release of the Sega Genesis that Nintendo began to produce its own hardware again.
The system didn't return until 1990 when a re-branded system was released, and the player base had grown a great deal. Many fans of the Famicom never stopped playing, and the new system was a success. However, Nintendo quickly decided to dispose of the Famicom hardware, for the system was to be phased out with the launch of the Game Boy.
Then we had the Nintendo DS, and it was the first time that Nintendo had sold a gaming console on the basis that it was not for core gamers. There was a huge demand for a machine which didn’t require you to spend a lot of money on games.
Nintendo first released the Nintendo DS in Japan in 2004, and it was an immediate hit. Nintendo made a huge marketing push behind the DS, and it was a huge success. It got people hooked on buying games for it, and then they started to buy games for it. It was only when the DS made it over to the West that people realised that it was in a market which no one had really thought about before. 827ec27edc
