Some Live CDs, such as Knoppix or QEMU -based Live CD's, offer more advanced options than the WinPE environment. For example, if the damaged system is a dual-boot system and the Live CD uses GRUB as a boot loader, the user can run the Live CD's boot loader (such as QEMU) and then select a primary OS partition or an operating system entry from the Live CD's menu to boot the damaged system from the Live CD. Or, QEMU can be configured to boot from a program file on the Live CD's hard disk, and has a quite advanced option to load Windows PE files or Active Scriptable Installable File System (ASIFS) images (disk images) directly from CD. But in practice, the default option is to mount the system drive to the Live CD, and then browse the Windows partitions or Active Directory to copy data from the damaged partition. Depending on the size of the recovery, this process may take days or weeks. Live CD's have many advantages, but they also have some major drawbacks:
When booting from a Live CD or DVD, you can usually retrieve data from a damaged or corrupted drive by booting from the CD, and either using the CD's file manager to access the damaged drive and copy data across, or using optical disc authoring software to copy files from the damaged drive to the backup media. But by the time you have the option to make an emergency boot from a Live CD or DVD, data may have already been lost, and the only option is to recover the data while it is still there.
For a quick and easy solution, it is possible to image the entire drive (or part of it) to another drive, or to another media device. It is possible to set up a bootable USB drive to boot from, and then reboot the device once it is plugged in. The system can be configured to boot from the USB drive, thus avoiding a failed hard drive or bad system.
