Meaning and origin of the term "jedi mindtrick"

I saw a lot of TV shows and movies recently (Adventure Time, 90's kids' shows, etc.)

In episodes of these (usually kid's) shows, a character would hold a loud, noisy light saber in front of their opponent and the opponent would freeze (or whatever) until the sound of the lightsaber ceased. I've heard that word used quite a bit in these TV shows and movies, but I don't think I've ever heard the term before. It seems to be British, I think, or at least it's used a lot in British movies.

What does it mean and where does it come from?

The Star Wars EU Encyclopedia has a lot of information on the origins of such devices, and how they are used. In particular, I found the following fascinating:

The Jedi fighting technique which Luke refers to in The Empire Strikes Back. The fighting manual, The Jedi Path and Pouches of Holding was written by Kevin J. Anderson and Donald F. Glut, respectively. This manual was one of the main driving forces of the creation of the first Sith Lightsaber – the Zabrak saber seen in Shadows of the Empire. Skywalker’s lightsaber in the original trilogy are variations of it, and the first official Stormtrooper-issue Lightsaber, the Zabrak saber from Return of the Jedi.

It was designed to temporarily paralyze the opponent during a lightsaber fight. Stasis fields and Force lightning are both possibilities. Some people think the term “jedi mind trick” comes from Leland Chee, an early Star Wars scholar, but that is a rumor that has never been proven. In his book, The New Essential Guide to Warfare, Chee mentions the “brief but profound psychological effect of a strong electromagnetic field and lightning bolt” as “an ancient military technique that is still used today.”
